Research Interests

What motivates people to use drugs in a harmful way despite the negative consequences that are associated with drug addiction?  I’m interested in understanding the cognitive and emotional correlates associated with drug motivation in the drug dependent individual.  My program of research focuses on the investigation of mechanisms underlying addiction motivation and how these processes are influenced by drug withdrawal.   I’m most interested in how these processes are similar across common drugs of addiction (i.e., nicotine, alcohol, and marijuana).  I have specific expertise in the utilization of event-related potentials, startle probe methodology and other psychophysiological measures to investigate the effects of drug withdrawal on cognition, emotion and behavior.
