Thanks for your interest in our research. Here's some
more information about this study so you can decide whether you'd like to be
involved.
The study is designed to investigate what the effect of smoking
marijuana has
on performing a visual attention task in individuals 18-35 years of
age. We are interested in examining
this effect in people with different levels of exposure to marijuana
use (from
a lot of exposure to very little or none). However, the study
does not involve smoking marijuana in the lab. The study requires
participants to come in for 2 lab visits. The first visit will
last about 1½
hours and will include a brief interview regarding your drug use and
medical
history, collection of a urine sample to measure drug use, completion
of paper-pencil
questionnaires and a baseline recording of your performance during the
task. If you are a marijuana smoker, you may be randomly assigned
to a
study group that will require you to abstain from using marijuana for
three
days prior to Visit 2.
The second visit lasts approximately 2 ½ hours and participants will perform
a series of visual attention tasks and complete a few more
questionnaires. While participants perform the task, we will be recording
eye movement and facial muscle activity using sensors attached to the
face. Additionally, if you were asked to refrain from using marijuana for
three days prior to this visit, we will need to confirm this with another urine
sample.
Participants will be paid by check $30 per hour at the end of the 2nd
visit. Additionally, for participants that were asked not to use
marijuana for three days prior to Visit 2, a $200 bonus for abstinence will be
mailed after results of the urine analysis are processed (approximately two
weeks).
Finally, it is important to note that all of the information you provide to us
will remain STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Your name will only be recorded on our
study consent form and all other information is coded by number and kept in a
separate secure area. Additionally, our lab has received a Certificate of
Confidentiality from the Department of Health and Human Services for this study.
This certificate stipulates that our lab can not reveal personal information
regarding participant drug use behavior to any other organization, law
enforcement entity or government institution. A copy of this certificate
is available by clicking on the link above and you will have the opportunity to
ask any questions you have about this issue prior to participation in the
study.
If you are still interested in being involved in the study, the next step is
for you to respond by emailing us: 1) your first name, 2) phone number where
you can be reached and 3) best time to reach you. Due to the overwhelming
response we have received for this study, it may take up to two weeks for us to
contact you by phone. At that point we can answer any questions you have
about the study and we will need to ask you a few questions to see if you
qualify to participate. We will also schedule your study visits based on
the time that best suits your schedule and our lab availability beginning in mid-January
through the summer of 2009.
Thank you again for your interest in our study.
Best wishes,
