Measuring BAL with the AlcoSensor IV Breathalyzer

 

If participant has recently consumed alcohol, have them rinse out their mouths with water before taking Breathalyzer.

 

Supplies needed for an individual test

·       The breathalyzer (located on bookshelf in 187)

·       A mouthpiece (located on bookshelf in 187) 

 

To obtain a BAL measurement

1.     Insert the longer tube end of the mouthpiece into the breathalyzer until it clicks

 

2.     Once mouthpiece is inserted, the machine will perform a test procedure.  When completed it will display SET on the LCD

 

3.     Press the black SET button

 

4.     The breathalyzer will conduct a blank test, it will flash BLNK and then test the blank sample.  Blank sample should read .000

 

5.     When TEST appears on the LCD, you are ready to measure the participant's BAL

 

6.     Tell the participant to blow on the tip of the mouthpiece steadily until they hear the machine click.  If the machine doesn’t click and test the sample, repeat the process from step 1.

 

7.     The machine will take a few seconds to display the BAL of the participant

 

8.     Record the BAL and time on the session form

 

NOTES

Ø    Always eject the mouthpiece from the machine when finished with a measurement

Ø    You can reuse the mouthpiece for different tests with the same participant.

Ø    Discard the mouthpiece after the participant is released

Ø    The participant cannot be released until they have a BAL of .029 or lower
