Drinking Behavior Survey (DBS) Resources

This is a five-item measure designed to assess the quantity and frequency of drinking behavior among institutionalized individuals. No total score or scale scores result from this questionnaire.

Data Entry Instructions

For each participant, enter the following information:

Column 1: Participant ID #

Column 2: Length of time in prison, recorded in months

Column 3: Length of time in drug and alcohol program, (DAP), recorded in months

Column 4: Average frequency of drinking occasions per month prior to arrest. Items listed in weeks are converted to months. See below for coding of responses:

• 0. Once a month or less (including never) coded 1
• 1. 2 or 3 times a month coded 2.5
• 2. Once a week coded 4
• 3. Twice a week coded 8
• 4. 3 or 4 times a week coded 14
• 5. 5 or 6 times a week coded 22
• 6. 7 or 8 times a week coded 30
• 7. 9-13 times a week coded 44
• 8. 14-20 times a week coded 68
• 9. 21 or more times a week coded 84

Column 5: Average quantity of drinks per occasion prior to arrest. Item responses of 0-6 coded 0-6 respectively. For items 7-9 use the following coding:

• 7. 7-9 drinks coded 8
• 8. 10-12 drinks coded 11
• 9. More than 12 drinks coded 13

Column 6: Length of time since last drink, recorded in months
