Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD)

The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) is a self-report rating scale that is designed to measure current symptoms of depression.  It consists of twenty items.  

 


Item Coding


The CESD consists of twenty items that are rated on a four-poing likert scale (from 0: rarely or none of the time to 3: most or all of the time).  Scores range from zero to sixty.  Higher scores indicated a higher frequency of depressive symptoms during
the last week.  



Scales

 

The CESD yields 1 total score. Description of the scale and item loadings are listed below.  Scale scores are calculated as the sum of respective items.  Underlined/bold items are reverse scored.
